depth

Depth is a control on many modulation pedals, such as phasers, chorus, vibrato, tremolo, and delay effects, that sets the intensity of the effect123. At lower depth settings, effects tend to be subtler, such as smooth amp-like tremolo, subtle chorus sweetening, or 12-string approximations, while higher settings produce harder-hitting or more pronounced sounds like low end throb, queasy wobble, or lo-fi rotary speaker feels456. On phasers, rate and depth controls together let a player switch between sluggish phasing and distorted modulation3. Depth can also appear as a descriptive term for tonal richness, such as warmth and depth added by a transformer in a compressor or by organic repeats from BBD chips in a delay78.
