digital delay

A digital delay is a delay effect that converts the audio signal into digital information, stores it in a buffer until required, and converts it back to the analog domain for playback1. Digital delays are cleaner, brighter, and more defined than other delay types, making them suited to precise rhythmic playing such as dotted eighth-note patterns or modern, articulate sounds2. Early digital delays were expensive rackmount units in high-end recording studios, with switches and knobs for every parameter, no presets, and LED panels showing delay time in milliseconds for exact tempo-matched settings1. In a rig, a digital delay sounds better in an amp's effect loop, where it sits behind the preamp, the source of overdrive3.
