diode
A diode is an electronic component used in effects pedals for clipping, which shapes a pedal's distortion character1. Different diode types produce different tones: silicon diodes give a brighter, more aggressive sound with bite2, while germanium diode clipping adds harmonics and texture for a richer, more tube-like character34. Diode type also affects output level and compression, as one pedal's red LED diode setting is considerably louder and less compressed than other positions5. Many pedals offer selectable diode-clipping options, ranging from classic overdrive circuit types to molecular junction diodes that render a cleaner, more even tonality617.
