humbucker
A humbucker is a type of guitar pickup, commonly referenced in effect pedal descriptions as a pickup type alongside single coils1. Sources use the term to describe how pedals respond to or are voiced for different pickups: some fuzzes and overdrives are said to work with both humbucker and single-coil guitars23, while others are voiced specifically for a humbucker-driven tone4. A bridge humbucker is cited as suited to higher-gain classic rock tones5, and a neck humbucker is associated with smooth "woman tone" sounds6 and with darker, warmer character when the tone knob is rolled back7. Humbuckers are also used as a tonal reference, with some pedals described as making single coils sound fatter or more like a humbucker89.
