modulated delay

A modulated delay is a delay effect whose repeats are altered by modulation, producing movement such as chorus, warble, or wobble in the echoed signal1. Sources use the term to describe pedals ranging from subtle shading on the repeats to full-on rich modulated delay2, with controls that set how much chorus or warble is present in the delay1. The effect appears in pedals described as dark and dreamy3, warm and lush analog-style4, or chaotic5, and can stack well with fuzz6. The term also describes the wavy sound produced by older tapes in the Roland Space Echo RE-2017.
