new old stock
New old stock, often abbreviated NOS, describes vintage components such as transistors, diodes, and tubes that are old but unused, and that builders install in pedals and other effects123. In fuzz and overdrive circuits, NOS transistors are reported to shape gain and character, for example lowering gain for a warmer, woolier, more versatile sound14, or producing a perceptible midrange bump with increased top-end headroom5. NOS germanium diodes are used to achieve a classic sound with tighter low end, richer mids, and smoother highs6, or a lighter, more open-sounding overdrive7. Builders also pair NOS parts with careful matching to individual units for optimum tone and performance8.
