noise gate
A noise gate is a utility pedal that eliminates signal below a set threshold, making it a more harsh, less responsive option than a noise suppressor1. It has a more complex operation than a typical pedal, with more in common with studio gear than an overdrive pedal2. Its Threshold control sets the level at which the gate opens and lets signal through, while Attack and Release controls set the time taken to move from closed to fully open and from open to closed2. A common application is in the effects loop of a high-gain amplifier, where it eliminates unwanted amp noise while reacting naturally to tone, sustain, and pick attack1. A poor quality gate, or one set too high, can cause a pronounced on-and-off sound rather than a smooth fade3.
