resonance

High resonance settings produce quacking funk sounds from envelope filters, since louder signals open the filter more and the resonance intensifies that response1. It can also sound metallic, which sources associate with industrial metal styles2, percussive synth tones3, and flanger territory from metallic resonance to jet-plane whoosh4. On phasers and choruses, a resonance knob increases intensity or shifts the response toward flanger and ring-modulation-like tones56. Filter designs may use high preset resonance for maximum harmonic content without self-oscillation7.
