sustain

Fuzz and distortion pedals are often described by how much sustain they add, as with the Big Muff's long sustain1 and its cello-like sustain for lead sounds2. Compressors can also add sustain to dirty tones3 or provide squash and sustain by adjusting knobs4. A control labeled sustain may set this amount, and setting gain/sustain very high on high gain circuits can introduce hiss noise5.
