vacuum tube

A vacuum tube is an electronic component used in amplifiers and in some pedals, such as the 12AX7 tube at the core of the Tubesteader Roy preamp and overdrive1. In guitar gear it is associated with warmth, rich overtones, compression, and long sustain, qualities that pedals often simulate or reproduce234. Sources describe tube-like sound as soft clipping with lower noise, sag or compression typical of tube power amps, and the breakup of vintage tube-powered amps567. Some circuits model tube distortion by changing the waveform and compressing the signal, while other pedals contain actual tubes81.
