volume pedal

A volume pedal is a foot-operated device that controls a guitar's signal level in real time by rocking a pedal backward and forward.1 Inside a traditional passive volume pedal is a potentiometer, or "pot," acting as a variable resistance control, and as the pedal moves, the pot changes how much signal is sent to the amplifier and how much is reduced to ground.2 It gives finer control over playing level, allowing more subtle dynamics or driving the rest of the setup harder, and is used for master volume, boosting solos, volume swells, and muting the signal.31 It also frees the hands and avoids pot wear, and can shape sustain, smooth attack, and create expressive phrasing that responds to the player's touch.42
