The Acorn Amplifiers Vegeta Drive is a distortion pedal built around a hard clipping single op amp circuit, with a boost toggle switch on board for pushing the circuit harder1. Acorn describes it in its own product copy as "IT'S OVER 9000!", a reference to the Dragon Ball Z character Vegeta, whose Scouter appears on the pedal as well: the Scouter lights up when the pedal is engaged1.
What it does
Hard clipping is a distortion approach where diodes chop the tops off the guitar's waveform inside an op amp stage, which is a common way to build a focused, saturated distortion voice. Acorn's product page calls the Vegeta Drive a "Hard clipping single op amp distortion pedal with boost toggle switch"1. The toggle gives the player a second gain stage of sorts: flip it and the circuit gets an extra push without touching the knobs.
Power and bypass
The Vegeta Drive runs on standard 9V pedal power and is true bypass, so it drops out of the chain entirely when off1. Acorn states it "Consumes less than 30mA of current"1, a light draw that fits comfortably on any pedalboard supply.
Acorn's page specifies standard 9V pedal power. As with any 9V pedal, use a center negative supply and avoid daisy chaining with pedals that need different voltages.
Where it sits in Acorn's range
The Vegeta Drive is one of several drive pedals from Acorn Amplifiers. The maker also offers the Acorn Amplifiers Circuit Fuzz, a fuzz with a removable boost circuit board, and the Acorn Amplifiers Epstein Isn't Dead Op-Amp Boost/Distortion. For a wider look at the category, see Distortion Pedals and Boost Pedals1.
Price
Acorn Amplifiers lists the Vegeta Drive at $149.00 on its product page1.
