The Alesis Bitrman was a tabletop effects unit made by Alesis, released in 2004 as part of the company's "ModFX" series. It was marketed to DJs and "table-top musicians" rather than guitarists, and it has since been discontinued. 1 2 3

Publication dates for the Bitrman's release differ: Guitar World gives 2004, while MusicRadar's coverage of the later Bitters pedal refers to a 2002 unit. The two sources disagree, and no official record settles it.

What it does

The Bitrman combined distortion-style bit manipulation with conventional modulation effects. Guitar World reports that it featured what Catalinbread calls "pedestrian effects," including tremolo, phaser, and flange, alongside its more distinctive signal-mangling modes.2 Those modulation categories survive today in dedicated pedals such as tremolo, phaser, and flanger designs, but the Bitrman put them in one desktop box aimed at electronic musicians.

How it was received

Writing in 2024, gearnews.com's reviewer summed up the unit this way: "The Bitrman was unique and powerful but had its flaws and lacked a modern interface and quality refinements."3 Delicious Audio's Paolo De Gregorio described it as "a 2004 tabletop effect that wanted to be disruptive and ended up being discontinued."1

The Bitrman today

Although Alesis no longer makes the Bitrman, the design returned to attention in July 2024, when Catalinbread released the Bitters, a multi-effects pedal based on the Bitrman's approach and described by Delicious Audio as a reimagined version of the discontinued unit, with a new Mix knob added.14 For players curious about the Bitrman's sound, the Bitters is the current, pedalboard-friendly take on the same idea.
