The Exploder Distortion Device is a distortion pedal from Beautiful Noise Effects. It is a highly expanded and modified version of the gain circuit from the company's When The Sun Explodes Reverberation Distortion, packaged on its own in a standalone pedalboard-friendly enclosure1.
What it does
At its core, the Exploder is a 3-way switchable hard-clipping pre-amplifier with 1000x gain amplification, running into an active 3-band EQ after the amplifier stage. Pedal of the Day describes the range as covering "anything from gritty amp-like overdrives to massively destructive fuzz tones," so it reaches from overdrive territory into fuzz sounds depending on how hard it is pushed1.
The feature that sets it apart is an envelope controlled white noise generator, a tool commonly used in analog synthesizers. It can be blended into your signal and turns on and off with your instrument's signal strength, adding noise that follows your playing dynamics1.
What reviewers said
Pedal of the Day's 2023 review was enthusiastic about the pedal's take on distortion1:
"takes the distortion genre head-on, flipping it on its back, twisting it around and spitting it right back out, in a glorious and super-loud fashion."1
