The Missionary Fuzz V2 is a fuzz pedal from Black Mass Electronics, a maker based in Massachusetts. It is built around adaptability: at low pre-gain and fuzz settings it can produce overdriven tones, and as you push the controls it opens out into what the maker describes as "an incomprehensible wall of sound."1
What it does
The pedal gives you three main ways to shape the sound. The pre-gain control works like the volume knob of a guitar, so rolling it back cleans the pedal up the same way turning down on the instrument does. The fuzz control can be cut back in pursuit of clarity, and the maker says the pedal can be used like an overdrive in that mode, with enough output to keep up in a mix. The bass control lets you clean up low end frequencies and avoid blowouts, which matters when a fuzz's low end falls apart at high gain.1
At low pre-gain and fuzz levels the pedal also produces overdriven tones, so it reaches into overdrive territory as well as full fuzz.1
Placement in the chain
Most fuzzes are fussy about where they sit on a board, usually wanting to go first after the guitar. The Missionary Fuzz V2 takes a different approach: the circuit includes a transformer-based pickup simulator, which means the pedal can be placed anywhere in the chain without fear of buffers changing how it behaves.1
"The Missionary Fuzz is our attempt at shedding the snake’s skin and letting you harness that deafening sales pitch for yourself."
