The Broughton Audio Resonant Filter Equalizer is a pedal that builds its tone control around three tools: a high pass filter, a low pass filter and a semi-parametric middle EQ. Broughton Audio describes it as creating "unique tone control by combining a high pass filter, low pass filter, and middle eq"1. It sits in the wider family of filter pedals and equalization pedals, and it shares ground with the maker's other filter designs such as the Low + High Pass Filter and the State Variable Filter.

What the filters do

Both the high pass and low pass filters have a slope of -12 dB/octave, and each has its own resonance control. Broughton Audio explains that the resonance allows "a bump at the cutoff frequency, accentuating the effect of the f"ilter1. The resonance ranges from -3dB all the way up to +15dB, so the filters can be softened as well as sharpened1.

The middle EQ is semi-parametric and includes a variable frequency control, so you choose both the center frequency and the amount of cut or boost1.

Suggested settings from the maker

Broughton Audio gives three starting points on its product page1:

  • Airy Hi-Fi: set the LPF at 10k with light resonance, which the maker says "can give an airy Hi-Fi effect without having to boost all treble frequencies"
  • Aggressive attack: set the LPF anywhere from 2k to 4k with added resonance, giving "more presence and char"acter
  • Cabinet sim: set the HPF around 100 Hz with +5 dB of resonance and the LPF around 5k Hz, which the maker says "can give a convincing cabinet sim"

The cabinet sim use puts the pedal in territory also covered by dedicated speaker simulation pedals.

Power and hooking it up

The pedal requires a DC power supply, which is not included. Broughton Audio specifies a standard Boss style connector with center negative polarity, accepting 9 to 24 volts with a current draw of approximately 20 mA1.

Broughton Audio recommends at least 12 volts if you intend to use the pedal with line level signals, for sufficient headroom. Higher voltages provide more headroom when using the pedal with hotter signals1.

The 1MΩ input impedance and 100Ω output impedance are in line with what players expect from a pedal placed early in a signal chain1.

Warranty and returns

Broughton Audio covers its products for one year to the original owner, and asks that warranty repairs be arranged by email to sales@broughtonaudio.com1. For returns, the maker asks players to email within 7 days of receiving the product; the returner pays shipping, and a refund is issued minus the shipping cost when the product is received in new condition1.

Questions

Is the Broughton Resonant Filter Equalizer true bypass?

Yes. Broughton Audio states the pedal has a true bypass switch, so when it is off your signal passes straight through without the filters or the middle EQ in the path.

Does it come with a power supply?

No. Broughton Audio says the pedal requires a DC power supply that is not included. It needs a standard Boss style connector with center negative polarity, and it accepts 9 to 24 volts with a current draw of approximately 20 mA.

What is the warranty on the Broughton Resonant Filter Equalizer?

Broughton Audio covers its products for one year to the original owner. For warranty repairs, the maker asks players to email sales@broughtonaudio.com.

How steep are the filters?

Both the high pass and low pass filters have a slope of -12 dB/octave, according to Broughton Audio. Each also has a resonance control that ranges from -3dB up to +15dB, which adds a bump at the cutoff frequency.

Does it take a battery?

The maker's product page does not mention battery operation. It states the pedal requires a DC power supply, not included, with a standard Boss style center negative connector.
