The CAST Engineering Gypsy Haze is an octave up/fuzz pedal, a fuzz circuit that adds an octave-up voice on top of the fuzz tone. What sets it apart from other octave and pitch pedals is its switching: instead of a simple octave toggle, it uses what its maker calls a very unique switching circuit to move between three octave modes, on, off and stutter, and the stutter mode can be controlled through tap tempo.1
What it does
The Gypsy Haze pairs a fuzz with an octave-up voice and gives the player three states for that octave: on, off and stutter. The stutter mode is controllable through tap tempo, so the octave can be chopped rhythmically in time with a song rather than switched by hand.1
The switching design matters for the sound as much as for the control. According to the maker, all the switching functionality is isolated from the signal path, which is how the pedal retains what they describe as its signature analog tone.1
Designer Steve Evans described the aim of the pedal this way:
"You can find a pallet of awesome tones without having to switch a million switches or turn 100 knobs."
