The Demeter FOD-1 Fat Overdrive is an overdrive and distortion pedal from Demeter Amplification that combines two of the company's circuits in one box: the classic Fat Control/Midboost and a new Overdrive circuit. Demeter calls it "The Ultimate Overdrive/Distortion Pedal," and describes the result as covering everything "From fat crunch to extra fuzzy to over the top."1

The controls

The FOD-1 carries four main knobs plus a switch, and Guitar Player's January 2007 review summed the layout up as "Fat, Gain, Volume, and Tone controls," with a side-mounted trimpot for adjusting the amount of volume boost.3

ControlWhat it does
Gain (drive)Sets the overdrive amount; variable from unity to over 100 times, driving the clip generators1
ToneA tone control for the overdrive voice1
VolumeSets the pedal's output level1
Loose/Tight switchChanges the overdrive response, see below1

The Gain control's range is wide by design. Demeter describes the overdrive as featuring "variable gain control from unity to over 100 times, that output drives our clip generators," meaning the pedal can be run as a clean-ish boost at the bottom of the range or pushed hard into distortion at the top.1

The Tone control drew specific praise from Guitar Player: "The Tone control is the key to getting the most out of the FOD-1, as it has abundant range and can move the tones from densely round to skinny without losing the bottom."3

The Fat circuit and the footswitches

The pedal has two metal footswitches: one for bypass and the other for engaging the Fat circuit.3 The Fat circuit is Demeter's classic Fat Control/Midboost, updated for this pedal, and it sweeps from a flat buffer, meaning no boost at all, to a full 12dB of boost.13 In practice that means the FOD-1 can work as an overdrive on its own, or as an overdrive with an independent low-mid boost layered on top, each switchable separately.

Loose/Tight: two overdrive voices

The Loose/Tight switch changes how the overdrive section responds. Guitar Player's reviewers, Art Thompson and Darrin Fox, tested the pedal through several tube amps and described the difference31:

"The response is punchier and brighter in Tight mode, while the Loose position provides a noticeably softer distortion sound" that is more dynamically responsive and cleans up when the guitar volume is turned down.

The same review noted that "The FOD-1 has lots of output and can deliver it even at very low Gain settings," which matters for players who want to use the pedal as a boost into an already-driven amp.3

Clipping: silicon or germanium

The FOD-1's clip generators can run on silicon or germanium diodes, switchable.1 Silicon and germanium clipping are the two traditional diode types in overdrive and fuzz design, and a switch between them gives the player two distinct distortion characters from the same circuit. For context on where the FOD-1 sits among its neighbors, see Overdrive Pedals, Distortion Pedals and Fuzz Pedals.

Power, size and availability

The FOD-1 runs off a standard Boss type 9V power supply.1 The adapter connects through a 1/8-inch jack for an AC adapter, and the adapter is not included.3 That 1/8-inch connection is worth noting before wiring the pedal into a board, since it is not the usual barrel jack found on most pedals and power supplies.

The FOD-1's AC adapter jack is a 1/8-inch type and the adapter is not included, so a standard barrel-plug power supply will not connect without the right adapter.3

The pedal weighs 2 lbs as listed by the maker.1 The enclosure wears what Guitar Player called "a sweet looking candy red paint job courtesy of Wilkin's Guitar Finishes."3 Demeter lists the pedal at $389.00 USD as of 26 October 2026.2 The maker currently lists no manual for the pedal.1

Questions

What does the Fat switch do on the Demeter FOD-1?

The second of the FOD-1's two footswitches engages the Fat circuit, Demeter's classic Fat Control/Midboost updated for this pedal. Its tone ranges from a flat buffer, meaning no boost at all, up to a full 12dB of Fat Boost, so you can add low-mid weight to the overdrive voice or leave it out entirely.

Does the Demeter FOD-1 come with a power supply?

No. The pedal runs off a standard Boss type 9V power supply, but the AC adapter connects through a 1/8-inch jack and is not included with the pedal. Players will need to supply their own adapter or use a pedalboard power supply with the appropriate connection.

What is the Loose/Tight switch on the FOD-1?

The Loose/Tight switch changes the overdrive's response. Guitar Player's reviewers found the response punchier and brighter in Tight mode, while the Loose position gives a noticeably softer distortion sound that is more dynamically responsive and cleans up when the guitar volume is turned down.

Can the FOD-1 use germanium diodes?

Yes. The FOD-1's clipping is switchable between silicon and germanium diodes, so the player can choose the clipping character rather than being locked to one type. The maker describes the pedal as marrying the classic Fat Control/Midboost with its new Overdrive circuit.

Does the Demeter FOD-1 take a battery?

The available information on the FOD-1 describes power from a standard Boss type 9V supply connected through a 1/8-inch jack for an AC adapter, which is not included. Nothing in the maker's product page or the Guitar Player review describes battery operation.
