The Dr. No custom pedal for Alain Johannes is a signature effect that Dr. No announced in January 2015 as a one-off custom build for the guitarist. The maker described it as a special custom "Art" pedal created for his "musical hero and friend Alain Johannes," combining fuzz and filter circuits intended, in the maker's words, "to create magical tones"1. For a player, that puts it in the territory of fuzz pedals shaped by filter controls, rather than a conventional single-function stompbox.
What it does
The pedal pairs fuzz with filter combinations, so the player can shape a distorted tone's character rather than only its amount of gain. Dr. No framed the design around unusual hardware as much as circuitry, promising "never seen before combinations and features like 'custom coin knobs', 'skull knobs', cool new design"1. Those coin and skull knobs would have set it apart visually from the maker's standard range as well as sonically.
Status and history
At the time of the announcement the pedal was still in development. Dr. No presented it as an upcoming signature project, writing that "this will become the most excited Dr.No signature custom guitar effect known to date"1. The announcement coincided with the maker going independent, which he presented as the step that made the custom build possible1.
The pedal was announced as a project in development in January 2015. Its final specifications, controls, power requirements and release details remain unconfirmed, so players should treat the features above as the maker's stated intentions for the design rather than a shipped product's specification.
