Dubrek Audio Boutique Sonik Fuzz

Fuzz

The Sonik Fuzz is a fuzz pedal from Dubrek Audio Boutique, a maker whose range also includes the Harmonik Germanium Fuzz, a modern take on the Interfax Harmonic Percolator with re-engineered filtering, a germanium diode toggle and an on/off LED1. The Sonik Fuzz sits in the fuzz corner of that range, and it is built around shaping rather than a single set-and-forget voice.

What it does

As a fuzz, the Sonik Fuzz takes a guitar signal and mangles it into something deliberately unstable and textured. Pedal of the Day's reviewer, Mike B, described the sound as "a giant beautiful mess of blips, squawks and bleeps, complete with a heaviness and buzzsaw quality that we all seek in a" fuzz1. That puts it on the chaotic, expressive side of the fuzz family, closer to a sound-sculpting tool than a straight gain stage, and it sits apart from the smoother end of overdrive pedals and distortion pedals.

The controls are aimed at that sculpting role. The Volume knob sets the output level, and the reviewer noted there is "loads of Volume on tap here, so no worries about anyone hearing you"1. Overall, Mike B found the pedal "extremely interactive and user-intuitive", well suited to knob-twisting and sound sculpting1.

For a sense of how it sits on a board, the review demo used the Demo Rock pedalboard by West Coast Pedalboard1.
