The Eventide HotSawz Synth is not a pedal of its own but a synth effect algorithm for the H9 multi-effects pedal, announced in November 2018 as the 50th algorithm in the H9 range. It is built on a new pitch-tracking, monophonic synth engine: it follows the note you play and turns it into a synth voice, one note at a time1.
What it does
HotSawz Synth covers what Eventide's marketing calls a range of monophonic synth tones, "from 'Blade Runner to Stranger Things'"1. Because the engine is monophonic, it tracks and voices a single note at a time, which is the usual arrangement for pitch-tracking guitar synths: play single lines rather than chords and the tracking stays clean.
Getting it onto an H9
The algorithm is delivered through the H9 Control app rather than sold as hardware. It runs on iPhone, iPad, Mac, PC and Android, and loads the algorithm onto a connected H91.
H9 Max owners get HotSawz Synth at no extra cost. Owners of other H9 models pay the USD 19.95 list price1.
Where it sits among synth pedals
As an algorithm inside a multi-effects pedal, HotSawz Synth competes with dedicated synth pedals such as the BOSS SY-1, the Source Audio C4 Synth and the Electro-Harmonix Mono Synth. Its pitch-tracking, monophonic approach puts it in the same family as those single-voice designs, with the difference that it lives on the H9 platform alongside Eventide's other algorithms rather than on its own board1.
