The 8100 Gold is a preamp pedal from Ghost Note Audio that puts the high-gain character of the Marshall Valvestate 8100 on a pedalboard. The Valvestate 8100 is known for its thick, saturated high-gain tone that became especially popular among mid-90s metal bands, and this pedal is inspired by the OD1 and OD2 channels of that amp1.

What it does

The pedal takes the gain stages of the Valvestate 8100's two overdrive channels and rebuilds them in pedal form. According to the maker's own analysis, the tube in the original amp acted mainly as a simple hard-clipping stage, something that can be effectively recreated using clipping diodes when matched correctly. That is the approach behind the 8100 Gold: diode clipping standing in for the amp's tube stage1.

Controls

The 8100 Gold adds a second "Post" gain control on top of what the original channels offered. It adjusts the signal level entering the clipping stage and unlocks a wider range of tonal variations, fine-tuning the amount of saturation and aggression1. For a player, that means the Post control works alongside the main gain to set how hard the clipping stage is pushed, rather than only how loud the pedal comes out.

Where it sits in the Ghost Note Audio range

Ghost Note Audio builds several pedals around specific amp circuits, including the ICBM, the RGX 100, the Century and the Omega Lead. The 8100 Gold is the one aimed at the Valvestate 8100's overdrive channels and the mid-90s metal tone they carried1.
