The Wood Face Fuzz is a fuzz pedal from Gold Dust Pedal Co, a boutique manufacturer based in Sacramento, California. When it was unveiled in November 2017, it was the only product the company had announced1.
Its circuit stacks three stages: a Muff-like input boost stage, a clipping Fuzz Face stage, and a flexible two-band Baxandall EQ. It is a silicon fuzz, so it sits on the silicon side of the fuzz family rather than the germanium one1.
What the EQ does
The two-band Baxandall EQ is the pedal's distinguishing control set, and the maker's guidance on how to use it covers the whole range of the bass and treble knobs1:
"Turn the bass and treble knobs counter-clockwise to boost the mids, to 12 o'clock for a flatter response, and clockwise for a thick Muff-like mid scoop"
In practice that means the same clipping Fuzz Face stage can be voiced three ways: mid-forward by turning the bass and treble knobs counter-clockwise, flat at 12 o'clock, or thick and Muff-like with a mid scoop by turning them clockwise. That EQ is part of a circuit that also includes a Muff-like input boost stage1.
