The Greyscale Devices Vintage Wah is a wah pedal built to recreate the sound of the classic VOX v846 wah pedals of the 1960s and 1970s. Greyscale Devices paired that vintage circuit concept with updated modern electronics, aiming for quality, long-lasting operation with little or no maintenance required. Reviewer Mike B, writing at Pedal of the Day in 2014, described it as the result of taking the vintage wah concept and, using some modern parts and techniques, refining it.1
What it does
The Vintage Wah produces sounds that aim to recreate those old VOX v846 units. In the Pedal of the Day review, Mike B wrote that playing it transports you straight into 'Shaft' or 'Superfly' territory, with funk tones coming out of the woodwork.1
His verdict on the sound was strongly positive, with one reservation:
"it produces an incredible wah sound, the one which most of us are forever searching to discover."
He noted that the wish for a bigger sweep was personal preference, and that the pedal's overall sound was what mattered.1
Enclosure and build
The pedal is housed in an old CryBaby housing, the same style of enclosure used by many classic wah designs. Greyscale Devices paired it with updated modern electronics intended to ensure quality, long-lasting operation with little or no maintenance required, which addresses a common complaint about vintage wah units.1
