The "Bad TV" Fuzz Phrase Si is a fuzz pedal from JAM Pedals, a hand-painted edition of the company's Fuzz Phrase Si circuit. It runs on BC107 silicon transistors: JAM Pedals says that "after meticulous testing of various silicon transistors, the BC107s emerged as the unequivocal choice," and that the circuit was then fine-tuned to those transistors, "securing all the attributes synonymous with the Fuzz Phrase."1 The Fuzz Phrase line began as a germanium design, and the Si version carries that legacy forward with silicon parts; the original Fuzz Phrase and other hand-painted Si editions such as the "Relic", "Black Data" and "IT" sit alongside it in the range.1

Controls

ControlWhat it does
GainSets the amount of gain.
LevelAdjusts the output volume, while also allowing for versatile tonal shaping.
Internal TrimmerSets transistor bias, factory-set at 4.5V.

The internal trimmer is the kind of control most players can leave alone: it is set at the factory, and it exists to bias the transistors correctly. The Level control doing tonal shaping as well as volume work is worth knowing about, since rolling it back changes more than just loudness.1

The "Bad TV" edition

Every "Bad TV" custom artwork pedal is a one-of-a-kind hand-painted piece, and the pedal you receive will differ in detail from the photos shown on the product page.1

The artwork is the difference here: the circuit is the Fuzz Phrase Si, and the "Bad TV" edition wraps it in hand-painted custom art. JAM Pedals offers other painted editions of the same circuit, including the "Achenbach", "Mandala", "Shards" and "Luminous" versions, plus the Black Fuzz Phrase LTD from the germanium side of the family.1

Power and practicalities

The pedal runs on a 9V battery or a 9V DC adaptor with a tip-negative plug, and draws 3 mA. At that draw, a battery lasts a long time and the pedal is no strain on a daisy-chain supply.1

JAM Pedals backs the pedal with a 30-day money-back guarantee with a full refund no questions asked, and a PDF manual is available for download from the product page. For UK buyers, the pedal ships DDP with 20% UK VAT and all duties included, with no extra charges on delivery.1
