The Jennings Growler (G.1) was a combined fuzz and wah-wah pedal made under the Jennings label, the company Tom Jennings set up after leaving JMI and Vox. Fuzzboxes.org describes it as "the Growler (combined fuzz & wah effects)", and as "a more sophisticated version of the standalone fuzz box", by which they mean the simpler Jennings Fuzz (F.1)1.
What it does
The Growler puts two effects in one enclosure. The wah-wah effect is controlled by a rotary pad, and foot switches toggle the individual fuzz and wah sounds, or combine the two effects together1. That two-in-one arrangement is what set it apart from Jennings' standalone fuzz pedal, and it sat alongside the Jennings Scrambler (S.C.1) in the early Jennings pedal range1.
Where it came from
Jennings' Growler was a more sophisticated version of the standalone fuzz box1. Where a separate fuzz pedal gives the player only that one effect, the Growler added a wah-wah effect, controlled by a rotary pad, alongside the fuzz1. Foot switches let the player toggle the individual fuzz and wah sounds, or run the two effects together1.
The Growler's foot switches toggle the fuzz and wah sounds individually, or combine the two effects together1. The wah-wah effect itself is controlled by a rotary pad rather than by foot1.
For more on the effect the Growler's fuzz side produces, see Fuzz Pedals, and for the other half of its circuit, Wah-Wah Pedals.
