JHS Bonsai Multi-Overdrive

The JHS Bonsai Multi-Overdrive is a multi-overdrive pedal from JHS Pedals. Instead of offering one overdrive voice, it packs nine circuits into a single enclosure: Delicious Audio described it as "a pedal that faithfully replicates 9 classic Tube Screamers!"¹ That makes it a way to cover the ground of many separate overdrive pedals, in the family of multi-effects pedals and overdrive pedals, without swapping boxes on the board.

What it does

The Bonsai's premise is simple: the Tube Screamer-style overdrive is one of the most copied circuits in effects, and different versions of it over the years have voiced the midrange, clipping and overall gain differently. The Bonsai gathers nine of those classic versions in one pedal, so a player can move between them rather than owning nine separate units.¹

The pedal drew attention early on for how closely it matched the pedals it replicates. Delicious Audio, the effects-focused outlet run by Paolo De Gregorio, highlighted an Andertons video in which the channel ran a blind test of the Bonsai against the pedals it copies, published in May 2018.¹
