JHS BOSS CS-3 HI-FI MOD

The JHS BOSS CS-3 HI-FI MOD is a modification of the Boss CS-3 compressor pedal, carried out by JHS Pedals. Rather than replacing the pedal, the mod keeps the CS-3's circuit and upgrades it: JHS describes the stock CS-3 as "a really versatile compressor with a good overall sound," and says the mod adds "new dimension and character by swapping vital components in the signal path with high quality replacements."¹

For a player, the appeal is straightforward: the CS-3 is a VCA (Voltage Controlled Amplifier) compressor, the same circuit approach Boss used on the later CS-2 and CS-3 to create the compression effect², and the Hi-Fi Mod aims to keep that character while cleaning up what the stock parts leave behind. JHS describes the result as a pedal where "the overall feel is tightened up and made more transparent."¹

What the mod changes

JHS's approach is component-level rather than a redesign. The changes are:

Independent reviewers of CS-3 modifications have pointed at similar component choices. On ovnilab.com, Cyrus Joaquin Heiduska wrote of one CS-3 mod that "increasing the value of the input capacitor also improved the low end," suggesting that input-stage component values are one place where the stock circuit can be improved.³

Where it sits among JHS compressors

The Hi-Fi Mod is one of several compressor-related products JHS has offered, alongside its own designs such as the JHS Pulp N Peel 500 Series and the JHS Lime Aid. It differs from those in being a modification of an existing Boss pedal rather than a JHS-built unit: the player supplies or owns the CS-3, and the mod reworks its signal path.
