The Jim Dunlop EVH Signature Wah is a wah pedal from Jim Dunlop developed with Eddie Van Halen. It is modeled on the Cry Baby that Van Halen had modified to include a higher Q inductor and a wider frequency sweep, and according to MusicRadar that modification gives the pedal "a more pronounced mid-range and a throatier, more vocal tone"1.
What it does
The pedal takes the standard Cry Baby formula and changes the inductor, the component that shapes the wah's resonant peak. A higher Q inductor gives a sharper, more pronounced filter, and paired with a wider frequency sweep it moves the effect further through the guitar's range as the treadle rocks. MusicRadar's Chris Wickett reported that this produces a more pronounced mid-range and a throatier, more vocal tone than the stock pedal the circuit is based on1.
Two other changes set it apart from the Jim Dunlop Cry Baby GCB-95 it draws on1:
- True bypass circuitry, which MusicRadar noted brings the classic Cry Baby the pedal is modeled on up to date, so the guitar's signal does not pass through the wah's filter circuit when the pedal is off1
- Two bright blue on/off LEDs, so, as MusicRadar put it, "wah users can, at last, tell if the pedal is engaged or not"1
Design and availability
The enclosure carries Eddie Van Halen's signature stripes in bright yellow1. The pedal was announced in March 2008 with the release date listed as TBC and an expected UK RRP of £2191.
The expected price of £219 was quoted in UK pounds at announcement and applies to the UK market1.
Dunlop has since built out a wide range of signature and special edition Cry Baby wahs, including the Jim Dunlop Cry Baby Mini, the Jim Dunlop BG95 Buddy Guy Signature CryBaby, the Jim Dunlop EC95G Eric Clapton Cry Baby Wah and the Jim Dunlop Iron Maiden Killers Cry Baby Wah.
