Keeley Fuzz Head

What it does

According to Keeley, the Fuzz Head uses germanium transistors "to produce vintage inspired tones"². Germanium transistors are the same parts behind the classic fuzz boxes of the 1960s, and they are known among players for a warmer, softer clipping character than the silicon transistors that replaced them in many later designs.

The circuit is what sets the Fuzz Head apart from a straight vintage clone. In a Premier Guitar builder profile, the pedal is described as "a simple blend of vintage germanium-fuzz design with modern gain stages," and the article notes that Keeley used buffers or differential amplifiers alongside the fuzz circuit, an approach that was uncommon at the time the pedal appeared¹.
