The Laney BCC-SPIRAL is a boutique chorus pedal made by Laney under its BCC Pedals (Black Country Customs) line. Rather than one chorus circuit, it houses three: Laney calls it "Three beautifully formed, distinctly different chorus pedals in one box," covering analog, digital and tri stereo chorus1. For a player, that means one pedal that can cover everything from subtle modulation to wide stereo chorus, depending on the mode selected.
The circuits behind the three modes
Laney positions the Spiral Array as a set of classic chorus sounds "painstakingly recreated from the classic era of Chorus the mid 70's to the mid 80's"1. Each mode is based on a specific unit from that period:
| Mode | Based on | Character as Laney describes it |
|---|---|---|
| Analog | 1976 Boss CE-1 | "a thick lush" analog chorus1 |
| Digital | 1979 Roland Dimension D | "a spatial digital chorus"1 |
| Tri Stereo | 1985 Dytronics Tri Stereo Chorus | "the renowned uber rich sounding" tri stereo chorus1 |
The three sources are well known to chorus players: the CE-1 is the rowing-machine-sized chorus from Boss's early days, the Dimension D is the rack unit associated with smooth spatial thickening rather than wobble, and the Dytronics Tri Stereo Chorus is the multi-voice studio chorus prized for its depth. Having all three approaches in one compact box is the pedal's central idea, and it places the BCC-SPIRAL among the chorus pedals that offer multiple classic circuit voicings rather than a single fixed sound1.
Size, build and expression control
The pedal is compact for what it carries. Laney lists its dimensions as 60mm x 75mm x 125mm (height, width, depth) and its weight as 0.38kg, with a carton of 80mm x 115mm x 160mm (HWD)1. The enclosure is described as solid metal chassis construction1.
The BCC-SPIRAL also includes Expression Pedal Control, so an expression pedal can be connected to control the effect from the floor1.
