Left Foot Pedals Zen Drive Clone

OverdriveDiscontinued

The Left Foot Pedals Zen Drive Clone is an overdrive pedal built as a copy of the Zen Drive, an original that the press has described as highly sought-after. The reviewer at Pedal of the Day heard a tough but warm overdrive from it, with a nice range on the Tone knob, running from a slight boost up to a borderline fuzzy overdrive1.

Left Foot Pedals is no longer in business, and the Zen Drive Clone is no longer made. The pedal was already discontinued when Pedal of the Day reviewed it in August 20141.

What it does

As a clone of the Zen Drive, the pedal aims at the same territory as the original: a warm, touch-sensitive overdrive that can sit behind the playing as a boost or push into fuzzier territory. The Pedal of the Day reviewer's verdict was that "this clone sounds really, really good, and close to what I've heard" of the original's overall sound in videos and audio clips1.

Controls and enclosure

The pedal keeps a plain face: a clean and classy-looking red enclosure without a lot of frills. One practical quirk to know before buying used is that the knobs carry no labels, so their functions have to be worked out by the user. The reviewer noted that "Volume is pretty easy, but the rest take a little work"1.

  • Unlabeled knobs, functions worked out by ear1
  • Volume is the easy one; the rest take some experimenting1
  • Red enclosure, minimal cosmetics1

Questions

Is the Left Foot Pedals Zen Drive Clone still available?

No. Writing in August 2014, the Pedal of the Day reviewer reported that Left Foot Pedals was no longer making the Zen Drive Clone, describing the company as out of business. The pedal only turns up secondhand, so anyone curious about its sound has to rely on used listings, videos and audio clips rather than new stock.

What does the Zen Drive Clone sound like?

The Pedal of the Day review describes tough but warm overdrive with a nice range on the Tone knob, running from a slight boost up to a borderline fuzzy overdrive. The same reviewer felt the clone sounded really, really good and close to the original Zen Drive as heard in videos and audio clips.
