The Lovepedal Echo Baby is a compact echo pedal from Lovepedal Custom Effects that adds modulation to its repeats as well as straight delay. Premier Guitar's reviewer summed up the pitch: a small-footprint delay with an analog-style sound, at a street price of $219 at the time of the review1.
What it does
In addition to delay, the Echo Baby offers modulation1. The single knob controls the delay time, and it can also dial in some modulation on the repeats if you hold the footswitch down while turning it2. That makes the pedal a two-trick unit from one control: plain echoes, or echoes with movement in them, without a second knob on the enclosure.
MusicRadar's reviewer described the character of the repeats and the range on offer2:
"Repeats have a nice crusty analogue flavour in the main"
That time range covers the territory most players ask of a small delay: short slapback for rockabilly and roots styles at the bottom end, and up to three quarters of a second for longer repeats at the top2.
Build and who it suits
The pedal comes in a rugged, diecast aluminum case, the standard stompbox format1. Premier Guitar's reviewer framed the trade-off plainly: buy it if you want a small-footprint delay that offers great analog-style sound, and skip it if you need full control at your fingertips1. With one knob doing double duty, players who want tap tempo, subdivision choices or tone and repeat-level controls will find the Echo Baby limiting, while players after a set-and-forget echo on a crowded board are the audience it was built for.
Lovepedal also makes other delay pedals with different approaches, including the Lovepedal Echophonic Jr, the Lovepedal Hermida EPH-3 Tape Sim Delay and the Lovepedal DL-1 Digital Delay, for players who want more controls or a different flavor of echo.
