The Flange With No Name was one of the effects made by Lovetone. Aion FX calls it "probably the most well-known of Lovetone's lineup, and particularly notable for its complexity both inside and outside"1.
What it does
Calling it a flanger undersells it. As Aion FX puts it, "The '?' was called a flanger, but this is just a simplification for lack of a more accurate term"1. The pedal's controls and internal design go beyond what a standard flanger offers, which is why it stands out among Lovetone's small lineup of boutique effects. For a player, that means it covers territory a conventional flanger does not, though the original is rare enough that most players encounter the design through later versions rather than the Lovetone unit itself.
Later versions of the design
The design has been revisited more than once:
The original Lovetone unit is the rarest of the company's effects, so players looking for the design today are most likely to come across the Behringer version or the ThorpyFX Camoflange rather than a Lovetone original1.
For players building a board around modulation, the Behringer version sits alongside conventional flangers such as the Boss BF-3 Flanger and the Electro-Harmonix Deluxe Electric Mistress, but its combination of flange, phaser and tremolo sets it apart from a single-effect flanger3.
