The Malekko Sneak Attack is an auto-swell volume pedal that can also be manually triggered or used in a tremolo mode1. Made by Malekko Heavy Industry, it is built around an Attack/Decay envelope generator: instead of you riding a volume knob to swell notes in and out, the pedal shapes each swell electronically, with separate length and curve controls for both the attack and decay segments1. At its heart is a very warm-sounding VCA analog compressor, as launch coverage described it2.

The pedal was announced at NAMM 20162, after an earlier version shown at NAMM 2015 that never went on sale3. It was expected to be available in March 2016 at an RRP of USD $189, with the companion Lil' Buddy footswitch at USD $353.

What it is and what it does to your sound

The Sneak Attack's core is an Attack/Decay envelope generator4. In practice, that means the pedal raises and lowers your volume along a shape you define: how fast the volume comes up (attack), how fast it falls back (decay), and the character of each of those transitions (curve). Used as an auto-swell, it gives you violin-like volume swells without touching a knob. Used in tremolo mode, it cycles the envelope repeatedly for rhythmic volume pulses1. It can also be fired one shot at a time by hand, using the built-in footswitch in manual trigger mode, which triggers the attack only4.

Because the volume control sits in a VCA compressor circuit, the pedal also has a Threshold control that adjusts the amount of compression2. Delicious Audio's NAMM 2016 coverage framed the whole unit as a VCA analog compressor with envelope controls and an external tap tempo switch linked to an LFO2.

The controls: attack, decay and curve

The control set splits into two groups: the envelope shape and the output.

ControlWhat it does
Attack lengthSets how long the volume rise takes143
Attack curveSets the shape of the rise143
Decay lengthSets how long the volume fall takes143
Decay curveSets the shape of the fall143
Volume/DepthSets the swell depth or tremolo depth3
LevelOutput level control2
ThresholdAdjusts the amount of compression; in tap tempo mode it multiplies the tempo by 1, 2, 3 or 442

The two curve and two length knobs give you control over the attack and decay parts of the envelope respectively2. That four-knob shape section is what separates the Sneak Attack from a simple swell or tremolo pedal: you can dial in a slow, gentle rise with a sharp cutoff, or a fast snap with a long tail.

Triggering, tap tempo and the Lil' Buddy

The envelope can be triggered or cycled in several ways1:

  • the input signal, so your playing fires the envelope
  • the built-in footswitch, for manual triggering
  • the Lil' Buddy, an external footswitch trigger for the Sneak Attack1
  • an external clock or click track1

On its own, the pedal covers auto-swell, tremolo and manual triggering. Adding the Lil' Buddy expands the features to include tap tempo and additional, unique control over the attack and decay3. In tap tempo mode, the Threshold control doubles as a tempo multiplier, giving you 1x, 2x, 3x or 4x the tapped speed4.

Pedal of the Day's 2017 review, which covered the Sneak Attack and Lil' Buddy together, found the pairing versatile5:

"One of the funner pedals we've recently had the privilege to review, the Sneak Attack/Lil' Buddy combo is a powerful sonic tool to use in numerous musical scenarios."
Pedal of the Day5

The same review addressed the obvious worry with a pedal this configurable:

"the actual ease of use with this pedal is not as tedious as you might initially think."

Versions and release

The Sneak Attack had a longer road to market than most pedals. It was originally announced at NAMM 2015 and was very hyped at the time, but never went on sale3. When Malekko showed it again at NAMM 2016, gearnews noted a very slight visual difference and an extra input jack on the right-hand side, presumably for the Lil' Buddy, compared to the 2015 version3. The released pedal is based on Malekko's new digital pedal platform, announced alongside the Lil' Buddy in a press release carried by Guitar Interactive Magazine4. Launch coverage also highlighted its rock-solid construction2.

A B-stock listing from Godlyke, dated October 2026, shows the pedal sold out. That unit was new-old-stock, played but showing little to no sign of wear, and included the Lil' Buddy footswitch trigger and box. It was listed at £146.00 GBP1.

One press view at launch was skeptical about the two-box approach: gearnews suggested it might have been better to combine the Lil' Buddy into one pedal in a slightly larger housing instead of having an up charge for a separate switch3.

Questions

Is the Malekko Sneak Attack true bypass?

Yes. News coverage of the pedal at its 2016 launch described it as having true bypass switching, which the writers noted was pretty much standard for stompboxes at the time. When the pedal is off, your signal passes through without coloring it.

Can the Sneak Attack do tremolo?

Yes. The maker describes it as an auto-swell volume pedal that can also be manually triggered or used in a tremolo mode. Pedal of the Day reviewed it under the name Sneak Attack VCA Tremolo and called it essentially a tremolo pedal, but much more.

Is the Malekko Sneak Attack analog or digital?

It is a digitally controlled analog VCA pedal. The audio path is analog, while the control side is digital: the pedal is based on Malekko's digital pedal platform, which handles the envelope generation, triggering and tap tempo functions.

Does the Sneak Attack come with the Lil' Buddy footswitch?

The Lil' Buddy was sold separately at launch, priced at USD $35 against the pedal's USD $189. Some later listings, including a B-stock unit, bundled the Lil' Buddy footswitch trigger and its box with the pedal.

Is the Sneak Attack a compressor or a volume swell pedal?

It is primarily an auto-swell volume pedal built around an attack/decay envelope generator, but it uses a warm-sounding VCA analog compressor circuit and includes a Threshold control that adjusts the amount of compression, so it covers compressor territory too.
