The 8Bit-Tron is a pedal from Mammouth Machine that combines an envelope filter with a bitcrusher and a fuzz character. Pedal of the Day described it as "an envelope filter that wants to be a fuzz but is trapped in the body of a bitcrusher"1. It sits in the filter pedal family, with the added digital-style grit of a bitcrusher on board.
What it does
The pedal's two sides, the filter and the bitcrusher, can be used together or separately. Pedal of the Day noted that "with the options to use them together or separately, it opens up a new spectrum of sounds for you (and your audience)". The filter portion can be set to move in either a Hi or Lo frequency range, which changes where the envelope filter sweeps1.
The left knob, labeled Frequency, controls the sampling frequency, which shapes the bitcrusher side of the pedal1.
What reviewers said
Pedal of the Day reviewed the 8Bit-Tron in September 2016 and called it "a strange and marvelous creation from Mammouth Machine". On its sound, the reviewer wrote that "The sounds that emanate from the 8Bit-Tron are a mix of blips and glitches, thrown together into a batter made of fuzz and funk", and concluded that "this unique effect lays waste to most pedal in these similar categories"1.
