The Matt Bellamy signature fuzz pedal is the Supermassive Black Fuzz, a fuzz designed with Muse's Matt Bellamy and made by Manson Guitar Works, the UK guitar manufacturer Bellamy has worked with on his signature instruments. It is Manson's first effect pedal, and it takes its name and its brief from the fuzz tone Bellamy used on "Supermassive Black Hole"12.
What it does
It is a fuzz, the saturated, sustaining distortion family that sits alongside overdrive and distortion on a board. Bellamy's stated design goal was a fuzz that sits better in a mix than most: "I usually find most fuzz pedals to be a little bit too full-range. Especially in how they sit in relation to the bass," he said during development2. To that end, the pedal was announced with "an EQ curve that you can slide from left to right or invert to create more of a scoop", a tone-shaping approach aimed at carving the fuzz around the bass rather than piling on top of it2.
Where it came from
Bellamy and Manson co-owner Adrian Ashton confirmed in August 2022 that a signature fuzz was in development, with no release date set at that point2. The pedal Bellamy had used for years beforehand was the ZVEX Fuzz Factory, the fuzz heard on "Supermassive Black Hole" itself, so the Supermassive Black Fuzz is his own take on that territory rather than a copy of it1.
What reviewers said
Guitar.com reviewed the pedal in February 20261. The review framed it as the arrival, at last, of a signature Bellamy fuzz: "And so we, finally, have a signature Matt Bellamy" fuzz pedal, the reviewer wrote1.
