The Mattoverse Fuzzy Gates is a fuzz pedal with a built-in tremolo, announced in January 2018. Delicious Audio's Paolo De Gregorio described it as combining "monster fuzz tones with a footswitchable tremolo to create a diverse disintegration device"1. It belongs to the same family of unconventional fuzz designs as the Mattoverse AirTrash and the Bad Passenger Fuzz MKII.

What it does

The Fuzzy Gates puts two effects in one box. The fuzz section covers what De Gregorio called "everything from light gain to gated fuzz tones", so it can run from a mild overdriven texture to the gated, spluttering character its name points at1. The tremolo can be switched in and out with its own footswitch, independently of the fuzz, and De Gregorio described the combination as "clean to fuzzed out tremolo"1. For a player, that means the tremolo can be used on its own, the fuzz on its own, or both stacked, without bending down to turn knobs mid-song.

Design and hardware

The pedal is built in a compact enclosure with top-mounted jacks, which De Gregorio described as pedalboard friendly: the cables run upward rather than out the sides, so the Fuzzy Gates takes up less width on a crowded board1. It is true-bypass, so the signal passes through untouched when the pedal is off1.

Its headline features, as announced:

  • Fuzz covering light gain through gated fuzz tones1
  • Built-in tremolo with its own on/off footswitch1
  • Two footswitches in one compact enclosure1
  • Top-mounted jacks for pedalboard-friendly cable routing1
  • True-bypass switching1

The tremolo has its own on/off footswitch, separate from the main fuzz switch1. That two-switch layout is the pedal's defining feature: most compact fuzzes offer only one.

Where it sits in Mattoverse's range

Mattoverse has built its name on fuzz designs that go beyond the standard three-knob circuit, and the Fuzzy Gates pairs fuzz with a second effect in one box. For other fuzz designs from the maker, see the Mattoverse AirTrash and the Bad Passenger Fuzz MKII, and for the wider field see Fuzz Pedals1.
