The Monster Effects Swamp-Thang is a tremolo pedal, a design that varies the volume of your signal up and down to produce a pulsing, shivering effect. Monster Effects built it alongside other pedals in its range, including the Mastortion overdrive, which Premier Guitar reviewed at the same time1.
Controls
The pedal's single documented control is the Speed knob, which sets the speed of the tremolo effect. How fast the pulse runs is the main thing a player adjusts on any tremolo, and on the Swamp-Thang that range leans toward the quick side: Premier Guitar's reviewer found that even with the knob fully counter-clockwise, the effect was still rather quick and hardly subtle1.
"After activating the Swamp-Thang with the Speed knob fully counter-clockwise and playing some straightforward I-IV-V blues..."
That matters if you want slow, swampy volume swells rather than a fast chop. Based on the reviewer's account, the lowest speed setting on the Swamp-Thang does not settle into the slow end of what a tremolo can do, so players after very slow pulses may find the range limited1.
