The One Control Marigold Orange OverDrive is a compact overdrive pedal from the Japanese builder One Control, part of the maker's line of mini-pedals designed by Swedish designer Björn Juhl and named BJF after him. Delicious Audio's Paolo De Gregorio describes it as "a classic, three-knob stompbox delivering a low to medium gain pedal that can be used as a boost or to drive your amp"1.
What it does
The Marigold Orange sits at the low to medium gain end of the overdrive range. One Control positions it for two main uses: as a clean boost in front of an amplifier, or as a drive pedal to push the amp into its own overdrive. That makes it a candidate for players who keep their amp's gain low and want the pedal to supply the push, rather than a pedal that generates heavy distortion on its own1.
Alongside its three knobs, the pedal carries a switch on the side panel that selects between two EQ settings: flat and mid boost. The mid-boost position lets a player add presence and cut without turning a knob mid-performance, which is a practical touch on a pedal this small1.
Where it sits in One Control's range
One Control offers what Delicious Audio calls "all flavors of overdrives" in its BJF-designed mini-pedal line, and the Marigold Orange is one of them1. Other pedals in the family include the One Control Honey Bee, the Baby Blue OD, the Persian Green Screamer, the SUPER APRICOT OD and the Strawberry Red Overdrive, each covering a different shade of drive.
