The Spank Master Overdrive is a custom-built overdrive from Pepers' Pedals, made at the request of a single customer rather than as a standard catalog pedal. It was built to be similar to the Marshall Shredmaster, a discontinued pedal whose vintage examples have become expensive, and the player who commissioned it described the result as "big and grunty just how I wanted it, just like that sound on Creep"1. For players weighing overdrives against distortion pedals or fuzz pedals, it sits in the overdrive-to-distortion territory the Shredmaster occupied.
Where it came from
The pedal was built at the customer's request. Nikki King, a player from the band Spank, asked Pepers' Pedals for something similar to the Marshall Shredmaster, explaining that "its not in production anymore and the vintage models go for" a high price1. Because it is a one-off, it is not a pedal a player can order as-is; it stands as an example of the maker's custom work.
King also designed the enclosure artwork. "He knew I was a designer, so he supplied me with his templates and I created my own design," King said, adding that Pepers "had some cool input into it though"1.
What reviewers said
The pedal was covered in a guest review on Pedal of the Day, written by the customer herself. King's verdict on the build was positive: "what he has produced is amazing, and all my colleagues can't believe I have got such a great pedal for such an awesome price"1.
"it's big and grunty just how I wanted it, just like that sound on Creep"
Because this is a single reviewer's account of a custom pedal, it reflects one player's experience rather than a broad consensus.
