°red sun fx Grantler

The °red sun fx Grantler is a two-knob, high-gain distortion pedal hailing from Germany, based on a 1-watt power amp¹. It sits in the broad family of distortion pedals, but its power-amp-based circuit sets it apart from the usual preamp-style dirt box.

What it does

The Grantler's circuit is built on a 1-watt power amp, which is the basis of its high-gain distortion¹. The two controls are for volume ("pegel") and preamp gain ("grant")¹, so the layout is as simple as a dirt pedal gets: set how hard the front end is pushed, then set the output level.

An internal switch allows lowering the gain by a factor of 10, which will transform it into more of a crunch kind of pedal¹. That gives the Grantler two working characters from one box: full high-gain distortion with the switch in its default position, and a lower-gain crunch voicing once the switch is flipped.
