The VooDoo Bass is an analog bass pedal from Roger Mayer, a maker long associated with effects for guitar and bass. It is a distortion-style pedal for bass players, descended from the Voodoo-1 circuit, the pedal associated with Jimi's "Voodoo Chile"1.
What it does
RockBoard's PedalPedia describes the VooDoo Bass as sonically similar to the original Voodoo-1, giving anything from slight natural crunch to smooth, powerful distortion. At maximum gain, the maker's description says it can make a medium-sized combo sound about four times bigger without over-compression, and give a single coil pickup a gutsier tone more like a classic humbucker1.
For a bass player, that positions it as a drive pedal that adds weight and grit rather than squeezing the dynamics, in the same family as other bass pedals and alongside overdrive pedals and distortion pedals guitar players may already know.
The Voodoo-1 lineage matters here. Roger Mayer's own page for the Voodoo-1 notes that its diode protection "provides peace of mind in case of polarity setting mistakes"2, a design habit across the Voodoo series.
Who uses it
Roger Mayer's news page names Seiji Kameda as a long-standing user of the Voodoo Bass: "He has been using our Voodoo Bass pedals for many years now and has inspired so many Japanese musicians"3.
