The Soundgas Grampian Type G is a preamp and boost pedal inspired by the original Grampian reverberation unit, a piece of vintage British studio gear whose preamp section has become a sought-after sound in its own right. It carries three controls: gain, volume and tone1.

What it does

The Type G takes the character of the Grampian 636's preamp and puts it in a pedal format. On That Pedal Show, Mickey and Dan described it as "inspired by" the original, with "your gain volume and tone on it"1. In use it functions as a preamp and boost, sitting alongside overdrive and distortion pedals as a way of pushing an amp or shaping the front end of a signal chain.

The original Grampian units are now expensive and inconsistent with age. On the same episode, the original was put at about £1,500 against about £600 for the Type G1. The vintage units also have a known quirk: as Aclam Guitars put it on their page about the circuit's history, "The vintage Grampian has a remarkable hiss, especially when the Aux Channel was used (Townshend's choice)"2.

Type G compared with the Broadcast

Soundgas also builds the Broadcast, another pedal in this family of circuits. On That Pedal Show, the two were compared directly:

"there's more headroom in the type G and you get more of that kind of front end of the note and delivery through the n"
Mickey and Dan, That Pedal Show1

In other words, the Type G cleans up further before breaking up and pushes more of the note's attack through, while the Broadcast compresses earlier. The trade-off they flagged is noise: the Type G's noise floor is higher1.

Soundgas also makes the Soundgas Type 636P, a pedal based on the Grampian 636 reverb preamp. Players weighing the Type G against it are choosing between two takes on the same vintage unit, with the Type G positioned as the more open, higher-headroom option per the That Pedal Show comparison1.

Questions

What is the Soundgas Grampian Type G based on?

It is inspired by the original Grampian reverberation unit, the British spring reverb whose preamp section became a sought-after overdrive and boost in its own right. The Type G puts that character into a pedal with gain, volume and tone controls, as demonstrated by That Pedal Show in 2026.

How much does the Soundgas Grampian Type G cost?

On That Pedal Show in July 2026, the pedal was described as costing about £600, against roughly £1,500 for an original Grampian unit. That figure was given in British pounds and has not been converted here.

How does the Type G compare with the Broadcast?

On That Pedal Show, Mickey and Dan described the Type G as having more headroom than the Broadcast, giving more of the front end of the note and delivery through it. They also noted the noise floor is higher on the Type G.
