The Rattle Bones is a fuzz pedal from Swamp Witch Pedals. Paolo De Gregorio, writing on Delicious Audio, describes it as "a quasi-octave fuzz, going from gentle vintage fuzz tones to all-out, square-wave, bone-shaking fuzz-stortion"1. In other words, one pedal that covers old-school fuzz sounds at the low end of its range and a harsher, distorted fuzz character at the top, with an octave-flavored edge.
How the circuit works
Most fuzz pedals generate their distortion by clipping diodes. The Rattle Bones takes a different route: it uses an internal dual distortion circuit with no clipping diodes at all. "No diode-clipping here: all the distortion comes from destructive wave interference!"1. Two distortion stages interact so their waves cancel and fight each other, which is where the pedal's character comes from.
Controls
| Control | What it does |
|---|---|
| CAPS | Cranks the caps to increase overall gain1 |
| STEMS | Increases the stems for more sizzle1 |
| VOLUME | Makes it louder1 |
The three-knob layout keeps things simple: CAPS sets how much gain the pedal delivers, STEMS adds high-end sizzle, and VOLUME sets the output level1.
