The Transition Delay is a compact delay pedal from TC Electronic, released in August 2012 as a collaboration with Guitar Center. It carries the sounds of TC Electronic's Flashback Delay and is built around four exclusive TonePrints customized by guitarist Barry Mitchell, Guitar Center's director of merchandise at the time1. It runs stereo in and out2.
What it does
The pedal's four TonePrints were tweaked by Barry Mitchell. The first, named EVO, is described by TC Electronic as a tribute to one of the greatest delay units ever created, the TC 2290, and a modern take on a classic sound2. Players who want that lineage in current TC hardware can look at the TC 2290P Dynamic Digital Delay or the Flashback II.
Because the Transition Delay shares its sounds with the Flashback Delay, it sits in the same family as the Flashback X4 and Flashback Mini, with the difference that its preset set was shaped by Mitchell rather than being the standard Flashback lineup1.
The Guitar Center collaboration
The Transition Delay was sold exclusively through Guitar Center and Musicians Friend2. The partnership went well enough to continue: TC Electronic and Guitar Center later released the Gravy Chorus and Tri-Chorus pedals, and Mitchell said of the earlier pedal, "Transition Delay was such a positive experience that when Tore asked me if I was interested in doing more sounds, I didn't hesitate"3.
The Transition Delay was a Guitar Center and Musicians Friend exclusive from 2012, so it appears on the used market rather than as a current catalog pedal.
