The Teisco Mini Metal is a compact distortion pedal built for high-gain playing. In a 2026 buyers' guide for beginners, Guitar.com named it the "Best budget distortion pedal for metal", positioning it as an affordable way to get a metal-ready distortion sound from a small unit1.

What it does

The Mini Metal produces a high-gain distortion, the kind of saturated, heavily clipped sound associated with metal rhythm playing. Guitar.com's Pete Wise wrote that "its high-gain sound makes classic rock and metal riffs sound their beastly best, and it'll also be a great choice for rhythmic chugging"1. In practical terms, that means it is voiced for palm-muted riffing and heavy rhythm work rather than light blues breakup or subtle grit; players after those sounds would look at overdrive pedals or fuzz pedals instead.

Controls

The pedal keeps its control layout simple, which suits a first pedalboard:

  • Distortion: sets the amount of gain
  • Volume: sets the pedal's output level
  • Tone: shapes the high-end response
  • Boost switch: a three-position switch for extra high-end cut-through, useful for making solos and riffs sit above a band mix1
"The on-unit controls let you dial up the distortion, adjust the volume and tweak the tone. There’s also a three-position ‘boost’ switch that can give you some extra high-end cut-through."
Pete Wise, Guitar.com1

Where it sits in Teisco's range

Teisco also makes a larger Teisco Distortion, a dual-circuit pedal with five knobs, two toggles and a +20dB boost side, which Pedal of the Day reviewed in April 2020. The Mini Metal is the simpler, budget-oriented take on the same effect type; for more on the category, see Distortion Pedals.
