The GOO is a signature distortion pedal made by ToneConcepts with guitarist Nels Cline, launched in July 2016. MusicRadar reported it as "a signature distortion pedal" from the Toronto, Canada company, available at launch for $289, with only 250 units produced that year1. It sits in the distortion family, alongside overdrive and fuzz.
What it does
The GOO is built around a deliberately simple idea. Gearnews described the design concept this way: "The basic concept appears to be this: Make a great sounding distortion with a simple control layout"2. Instead of a deep set of tone-shaping knobs, the pedal carries three controls: a volume knob, plus controls for "shininess" and "viscosity", ToneConcepts' own names for its tone and gain functions1.
MusicRadar reported that the pedal "promises to cover genres from rock to alternative to jazz fusion to blues"1, a broad range for a single distortion box.
Design and limited run
Visually, the pedal is "inspired by classic 1958 horror flick The Blob"1, which fits the gooey name and the fluid control labels. The 2016 run was capped at 250 pedals, so it was a limited release from the start1.
The GOO was a limited edition of 250 units produced in 20161. As a small-run signature pedal, it may not be in current production.
