The Echoczar Analog Stereo Delay is an analog delay pedal from Toneczar Effects built around BBD (bucket brigade device) chips, the same circuit approach used in vintage analog delays. It offers over one full second of delay time, which is a long reach for an analog design, and it adds modulation to the repeats. Pedal of the Day described it as "a BBD-infused, vintage-inspired, modulated black beauty with so many gorgeous tones and add-ons"1. For players exploring the wider category, it sits among delay pedals that trade digital clarity for the darkening, softening character of analog repeats.
What it does
The Echoczar gives a player two main voicing and control choices beyond the usual delay knobs1.
Vintage/Modern switch. This chooses the voicing of the repeats. Vintage Mode is warm and thick, while Modern Mode is brighter with more detail1. In practice that means the pedal can lean toward the darkened, blurred repeats of an old analog unit or hold onto more of the picked note's definition as it repeats.
Footswitchable Feedback mode with Safety knob. A second footswitch engages a self-oscillation Feedback mode, where the repeats build on themselves into the runaway, out-of-control territory analog delays are known for. A Safety knob is included "in case the runaway repeats get out of hand," letting the player set a ceiling on how far the oscillation runs1. That makes the effect usable on a gig without risking an endless howl.
What reviewers said
Pedal of the Day's 2018 review was unusually strong in its praise. The reviewer wrote that "an effects pedal makes its way to our shop and we are absolutely blown away, and today's pedal did exactly that as soon as" it was plugged in, and said it jumped way up their list of favorite delays overall1.
