TWA Wah Rocker

The TWA Wah Rocker is an envelope filter, or auto-wah, made by TWA (Totally Wycked Audio) and distributed by Godlyke. It exists in two versions: the WR-3 and the smaller WR-03. Both are modern recreations of the Guyatone Wah Rocker, a compact Japanese auto-wah that Godlyke describes as "a diminutive funk machine" used by professional players¹.

What it does

An envelope filter, or auto-wah, sweeps a filter across your signal in response to how hard you pick, so your playing dynamics control the effect rather than a rocker pedal. Godlyke says the TWA Wah Rocker "nails the squawky, slippery, super-funked-up filtering of the Guyatone version" it is based on¹.

The original Guyatone Wah Rocker line gives the background. The WR-2 used band-pass filtering that its maker described as ideal for electric guitar and keyboards⁴, and the Guyatone WR-3 was an auto-wah with a blend control and improved filter sensitivity that tracked both high- and low-output pickups⁵.

The TWA WR-3 was announced in March 2016 as an envelope filter with proprietary S3 "Shortest Send Switching"². Pedal of the Day reviewed the WR-03 the same year as an envelope filter in a compact box⁶.

That review verdict is the strongest published opinion on the pedal: for players chasing the discontinued Guyatone original, the TWA version was judged by Premier Guitar's reviewer to be, in many ways, the better choice overall⁷.

A related pedal worth knowing about: the Drunk Beaver Kramatorsk Wah Rocker, a hybrid that combines a Wah Rocker-style auto-wah filter with a DOD250-style drive using asymmetrical soft and hard clipping, plus a gain recovery boost⁸.
